This approach to a DIY vanity is a favorite among make-up enthusiasts. If you have been on the prowl for that perfect beauty space, you have most likely seen similar pictures on Pinterest or Instagram. So you liked it. And you commented. You might even figure out where to purchase what you need by scrolling through the chatter on social media. But what about all of the important things that you need to know about what you are buying? And how can you customize it for YOU?
RESEARCH
Before you start shopping around, first, do your homework! The best way to understand what kind of space you need is to take a look at your routine. What products do you use? How often do you use them? How do you use them?
The best way to answer these questions is to do a little self observation.
If you are having trouble making your list, take a look at this example below:

- Make a mess. For 3-5 days, go through your normal day and night routine leaving everything that you use out on your counter. This will help you figure out what products and tools you use the most and help you figure out how to organize based on what needs to easily accessible.
- Take mental notes. There is a reason that you want to create a new space...and it is most likely because you are frustrated with the space you are currently using. While going through your routine, make a mental list of what you don't like about the space and use that are criteria for the new space.
If you are having trouble making your list, take a look at this example below:
- Drawers are too wide / narrow
- Drawers are too deep / not deep enough
- Not enough counter space
- Counter is hard to clean
- No place to sit
- Mirror is too far away

The not-so-obvious details that you need to know before you buy.
- While the website gives some dimensions for the MALM dressing table, it does not give you all of the dimensions you may need. If you are looking to utilize the space under or beside the table, you will need to know the height to the counter (to match with your additional storage) and the height to the bottom of the drawer.
- Height (top of counter): 30.75"
- Height (bottom of drawer): 24.25"
- If you have baseboards, remember that the table will not sit flush with the wall. For a make-up counter, this can cause a problem because products can roll or drop in the crack. But have no fear, you have a few options. 1) You can offset the glass top so that it meets the wall, 2) use a piece of poster board and sandwich it between the glass and counter, or 3) put risers along the back of the table and block the gap with other products.
- The drawer organizers fit perfectly in the vanity drawer! Don't spend time trying to find something that fits. I warn you, the drawer is not very deep and a lot of other organizers I tried do not fit. I recommend buying 2 sets of organizers so that it covers the entire drawer.

ORGANIZING
Now for the fun part!! Remember all of the make-up that you left on your counter for days? Grab it and start to put together your beauty bar. Here are a few tips to help you along your way...
- Clean your product packages. It might seem crazy, but cleaning your make up bottles, boxes and brushes is a must before you start putting things in their place. Use brush cleaner or make up remover for the fastest and best results!
- Start with what you use the most. Once you have found a place for your most used items, go back to your shelves and drawers and start adding in the rest of your products!
- Opposites DO NOT attract. Although it is easier to organize based on size and where items fit in the trays and containers, it is not always the BEST way. Group similar items together or based on the order in which you use them. It will make your routine a breeze!
- Face Primers, Brighteners & Bronzer
- Concealer & Foundation
- Eye shadow & Primer
- Eyebrow, Eyeliner & Mascara
- Lipstick/Gloss
